Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

Matteo's Unexpected Presence

At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this year. He was on the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was persistently working to identify the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
